Baseball season is right ahead of us, as we near the end of Spring Training. While the Seattle Mariners haven’t fared exactly excellent during these last few weeks, they’ve recently seen a hot streak of wins. But that doesn’t matter. Winning isn’t everything and the point of the game is to make you happy, like deliriously happy. If you plan on getting into this year’s season, we’ve got some awesome start-tips for you!
Tip #1 AVOID THE TRAFFIC AND WATCH THE GAME AT HOME, or indulge in the experience and buy tickets to the stadium. INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY OVER TO ENJOY THE GAME
Tip #2 LEARN THE BASICS OF THE GAME
You can do this by reading, asking questions, or reading this blog post.
Here are a few terms to get you started:
- A “long out” is a flyball that threatens to be hit out of the park but is caught at the last second.
- What’s a flyball? A “flyball” refers to a baseball that is hit high into the air.
- A “foul ball” refers to a baseball hit outside the field of fair play.
- A “diamond” refers to the four bases of the baseball infield.
- A “double play” refers to a defensive play that results in two outs.
- A “walk” refers to when the pitcher throws four balls to a batter – the batter gets to go to first base automatically.
- ERA stands for earned run average, referencing to how many earned runs a pitcher allows in a game.
- RBI stands for run batted ins, and references the credit given to the batter for hitting the ball which allow another runner to make to Homeplate and, ultimately, score a run.
Tip #3 CREATE PLAYFUL BANTER AND CHOOSE SIDES
If you and your friends enjoy a little happy (and friendly) competitiveness, root for different teams!
Tip #4 MAKE IT AN EVENT AND MAKE SNACKS & BURGERS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR GUESTS
Especially if you’re just getting into the game, or perhaps are fully immersed (yet!), you might try your hand at a few new recipes you’ve been waiting to try out. Yes, you’ll enjoy the game and the social experience – but you’ll also have a full tummy of something more than potato chips and salsa.
Tip #5 …OR MEET AT A LOCAL BAR TO ENJOY THE CAME AMONGST THE CROWD
Enjoying something is all about perception and mindset. Perhaps you’ll enjoy the game more and become more engrossed in the outcome if you’re surrounded by friends in your favorite sports-establishment. Plus, there’s food and very little cleanup afterwards!
Tip #6 DRESS FOR THE OCCASION – EVEN IF YOU AREN’T GOING TO THE STADIUMS
Start by wearing comfortable shoes and dressing for the weather (sometimes it likes to rain here in Seattle) and top-off your outfit with team-inspired attire. And no, you don’t have to purchase branded clothing – try wearing team colors, like during high school spirit days!
Tip #7 ENJOY THE GAME & INDULGE A LITTLE
Even if you aren’t a huge fan, maybe your friends and family are, and spending quality time with them means giving. Maybe come football season, they’ll watch a few Seattle Seahawks games with you! (http://www.seahawks.com/)
If you’re planning a home-event, try these entertaining crafts the whole family will enjoy, like painting your nails the festive colors of your favorite team, creating custom coasters to protect your furniture during the game, or creating a door-hang with baseballs and festive ribbon!
Long story short, there are tons of ways to enjoy the game, even if you don’t think you like it and even if you know nothing about it. You can make refreshments, indulge your inner-creative, or just learn about the sport. And besides, you’ll still be hanging out with your closest and best friends!
What are your favorite ways to enjoy a baseball game, whether at the stadium or from the comforts of your own home!
