Mercer Island’s Luther Burbank Park

Located in the North End community of Mercer Island, Luther Burbank Park is one our favorite and most expansive parks on Mercer Island. While it doesn’t offer the sports variety that Island Crest Park offers or the equestrian opportunities that Pioneer Park has, but Luther Burbank has its own brand of fun and excitement.

LUTHER BURBANK, A HISTORY

In Luther Burbank’s earliest days, the land was home to the Luther Burbank School, which was closed in 1966. In 1966, the property became a county park, before ownership was transferred to the City of Mercer Island in 2002.

LUTHER BURBANK, TODAY

At 77-acres, Luther Burbank is one of Mercer Island’s largest parks. It offers ¾ of a mile of Lake Washington Waterfront, a children’s play area, three tennis courts, a public boat dock and fishing pier, an amphitheater, walking trails and more. Luther Burbank park is also known for housing Mercer Island’s premier dog park.

With excellent views of Seattle, Bellevue, and crisp Lake Washington waters, one could enjoy hours here playing, or simply observing the scenery.

While there are many things the park offers, the city has left much of the park undeveloped to foster a variety of local wildlife, including 135 species of birds, 50 species of waterfowl, racoons, beaver, muskrats, tree frogs, and rabbits, many of which live in the wetlands that occupy the north and south ends of the park.

Are you looking to visit Luther Burbank Park with a group? Parks are perfect places for larger gatherings, and Luther Burbank offers a few options. They offer several rental options, including two group picnic areas, tennis courts, and the amphitheater.

Though there is limited vehicle parking, the park is only a short walk from the Mercer Island Park & Ride, which is great for public transit commuters and carpoolers.
