2018-19 Classics on Film Series

The 2018-2019 Classics on Film series began in September and will run through the first week in April.  This film series celebrates the variety of films inspired by the unique game of chess, featuring a wide variety of documentaries and dramas. The films will be drawn from more than a dozen countries on six continents. You will find stories of inspiration, empowerment, genius, madness, political intrigue and surprise twists, all revolving around the timeless game. This year’s series will even include two French-language films, as well as a pair of films from director Patrice Leconte. Don’t worry, English subtitles will be presented!

Each film will be showing at the Aljoya Theater on Mercer Island. Lance Rhoades, a film historian, will introduce each film and lead a Q&A after the showing. Each film showing will begin at 7:30pm and will be free and open to the public.

This Friday, October 12th, you can catch the showing of The Luzhin Defence (2000), directed by Marleen Gorris. This film features John Turturro and Emily Watson. It is a film which captivates the drama and romance when an eccentric genius falls in love with a strong-willed society beauty.

Whether you are competitive in the strategic game or are hoping to learn more, don’t miss out on this film series. For a complete schedule of the showings, please visit here.
