Enjoy Hiking Through Seattle’s Carkeek Park

Carkeek Park is the perfect city park for hikers. It’s a short commute from downtown Seattle – only about 9-miles – and offers 220 acres of lush forest, meadows, wetlands, creeks, and beaches.

If you aren’t keen to Carkeek Park history, you might not know this is the second Carkeek Park. The first was located just north of Sand Point and was moved to northwest Seattle in 1928.

Carkeek Park

Are you a hiker ready for decent hill, but you’re too busy to venture outside the city? Carkeek Park is perfect for you! We love Discovery Park, but sometimes the trails can be a little easy – and that’s where Carkeek comes in. Many of the trails at Carkeek Park are steeper than most Seattle parks, offering a little more of a challenge and hike-like adventure.

The park also features a play area, picnic tables, hand-carry boat launch, and grills.

Much of the forest has been through rigorous restoration projects since the original Carkeek park was moved to this location. Restored areas include major portions of the forest and wetlands, where they’ve built miles of trails, created sustainable gardens, educated visitors, and a restored fruit orchard.

Though much has been done, it’s an ongoing process; and workers continue to volunteer every Friday morning in the Carkeek Park forests, removing invasive plant species, planning trees and shrubs, and doing ongoing care for completed portions of the park.

Because of all the past and present restoration, neighbors and volunteers managed to bring salmon back to Pipers Creek.

There is tons of parking available, but it does tend to fill-up during peak seasonal hours, when visitors take advantage of Seattle’s few weeks of hard-earned sunshine.

This waterfront park offers breathtaking views of the southern tip of Whidbey Island, the Kitsap Peninsula, and the Olympic Mountains.
