Mercer Island Forest Restoration Event

Mercerdale Hillside, on Mercer Island is well-known among joggers, walkers and families, as it provides an open space for residents of all ages. Unfortunately, the natural area on Mercer Island has become over-run with invasive plants such as non-native ivy, laurel and holly, which are a threat to the ecological diversity. Throughout the year, volunteers work together to remove these plants and replant with native trees and shrubs. The goal of volunteer efforts is to restore the local forest to remove invasive plants and support the growth of native conifers. Though throughout the year, volunteers target several areas on Mercer Island, tomorrow, Mercer Island Parks and Recreations, along with community volunteers will be focusing on the Mercerdale Hillside.

Volunteers of all ages are encouraged to come out for a fun day in the forest. There is no experience necessary – the proper training will be provided. For safety purposes, volunteers must wear long pants, sturdy, close-toed shoes and gloves, which will be provided. Additionally, volunteers may also consider bringing rain gear, warm layers, a sack lunch, and a full water bottle. The volunteer event will take place from 10:00am-2:00pm Saturday, April 13th. You can register online today to be a part of this wonderful volunteer opportunity!
